Child Photo Session, Owatonna, MN

Spring fever has hit me hard! Since we’re not going anywhere warm, the next best thing is looking at photos from a child session on a warm day! Last summer I had the sweetest girls travel all the way from Dakota, Minnesota to see me for some princess time. We started by trying on and selecting dresses at the studio. Then we ventured to Leo Rudolph Nature Reserve in Owatonna, Minnesota to have some fun.

Once we got to the park, the twirling and giggles started. They were little girls being truly carefree and having a ball. The most important part about taking portraits of young children is being flexible. Children at this age can react to the camera in many different ways so it’s important to take your cues from them and just go with it. And these two really had me going! I made my steps goal just by chasing them around the park. My favorite part about doing more of a lifestyle child session is capturing the kids how they truly are. The silly faces or the way they point their feet are the little details we try to hold on to as our children grow up. These sessions are always so much fun and it means the world to me to document it all for you. To book a session with me, I am always available by phone or email!

Selecting a Wedding Dress, Owatonna, Minnesota

Congratulations! You have met the person of your dreams and you’re ready to tie the knot. It’s time to figure out what you are going to wear on your wedding day. Finding the perfect wedding dress can be overwhelming and even a bit frustrating.

Know Your Venue

Are you having a beach wedding or a traditional church wedding? It’s important to remember that many churches will have their own rules about the dos and don’ts for brides on their wedding day. A see-through corset would be fine for a contemporary wedding at an art gallery, but would be completely out of place at a church wedding.

Budget

Wedding dresses will vary in price from a few hundred dollars to the equivalent of a downpayment on a house. There’s no reason to start your marriage off in serious debt. There are beautiful gowns at different price points. When you are looking at wedding dresses, don’t be afraid to tell the sales associate what your budget is and only look at gowns that fit within your range. How awful would it be to fall in love with a gown just to find out it is completely out of your budget. **Be sure to include the cost of alterations and accessories in mind when you are deciding how much to spend on your dress.

Dress style

By this point in your life, you have probably worn several different styles of dresses. Think back on those dresses and what you liked/disliked from them. Important things to consider are: how easy it was for you to use the bathroom, were you constantly tugging on it to stay up, and were you able to move your arms (remember you will probably give lots of hugs on your wedding day).

Make an Appointment

Want the extra special treatment? It’s more likely to happen if you plan ahead and make an appointment so they can have fun stuff like champagne on hand. Just like any other store, they will have staff members to meet the demand. If you don’t make an appointment, you may be stuck sharing a sales associate and have to spend a lot of time waiting around for dresses. The worst scenario is being told they service brides by appointment only.

Trust Your Instincts

When you put on your dress for the first time, you will just know it. Sometimes that feeling can be questioned by those you bring with you to your appointment. Now don’t get me wrong, they have the best intentions. Good intentions or not, too many people voicing their opinion instead of listening to you, can be frustrating. The easiest way to ensure your voice doesn’t get lost during the appointment is to limit the number of people you take with you.

What advice would you give a future bride?

Bucket List for 2019

2018 is nearing its end, which means it’s time for reflection and goals. This year will mark the end of my first full year in business as a photographer. I have been challenged in ways I never imagined. In my most wild dreams, I never thought I would photograph a wedding. This year alone, I photographed four of them! I enjoyed each and every one and can’t wait to shoot more weddings in 2019. My ability to manage large groups of people was tested several times as I worked with extended families for photo sessions. Trust me, getting twenty people (many of which are young kids) to cooperate at the same time is no easy task. I was even ambitious enough to plan/host a shoot-out event for photographers from across Minnesota.

After all of this excitement, I am ready for more new challenges. For 2019, I have created a Bucket List of photography sessions that I would love to capture. Some of these sessions are new to me and some are sessions that I enjoyed so much that I can’t wait to do them again. I mean really, who wouldn’t just love being able to shoot more proposals?

Family Photo Session, Waseca, Minnesota ~Family Photographer

This has to be one of the most fun and light-hearted winter family photo sessions that I have done this year! I just love everything about this family! Just check out how sweet this family is when they interact with each other.

The Engstrom family did a great job thinking about how to coordinate their outfits. Kelley & Zach chose focal color and used neutrals to pull all their outfits together. Since their family photos were taken in the winter, they made sure to wear plenty of layers to stay warm. They even brought a blanket with to wrap up with when they got chilly. Needs ideas for colors? Check my pinterest board with loads of color combinations.

For a family photo session, I start by taking the posed family shots. While I am shooting, I talk with the family members and get to know them a bit. This helps everyone in the family feel at ease. Once everyone has forgotten about the camera, I switch things up and do more lifestyle shots. Lifestyle family photos capture the connections between family members and tend to be my favorite shots of the entire session.

During family sessions, I always let the kids jump right in a test out some of their own ideas for photos. I have found that when kids are able to help out, they have more fun at the session. Having fun and creating memories is a huge part of a successful family photo session. When you have a good time during your photo session, it helps create a story and not just a nice image.

Another thing I love about family photo sessions is showcasing the different people that make up the family. Sometimes we forget about the relationship between the parents, so capturing their love is important to me.

Family photo sessions are a great way to decorate your home or create mini-albums for your family to view. To book a family photo session with me, I am available over the phone or email.
