Sending your child off to Kindergarten is such an emotional event for parents; it’s a sign that your little kid isn’t so little anymore. Those 5-6 years of taking care of your baby flew by and now you have to trust complete strangers to be the ones to take care of your beloved child. We all tell ourselves it will be good for them, and they will learn so much and have a lot of fun. But, at the same time, we are worrying and wondering what this big change will mean for our child and for us. Dropping my own son off for Kindergarten at Lincoln Elementary School in Owatonna, got me thinking about what his future would look like. Of course, I did the math to realize he will graduate from high school in 2031. It made me instantly feel old! 2031? What would the world be like in 2031? Ugh, so many more worries popped into my head! Can you tell that I worry just a little?
Making Lemonade out of Lemons
Well it was time to take all of my worries and do something fun with it. Instead of wondering what the future would look like, it was time to create it. I gathered up other kindergarteners from all over Owatonna to come show their school spirit and have fun in a photo shoot at the high school. They came dressed in their Huskies apparel, with gear for their favorite sports, and tons of energy! I used a few of my corny jokes from my days as an elementary teacher and the kids were laughing in no time. I’m not sure who was having more fun, me or the kids. What started as a fun personal project, is now going to be a tradition with my family. Each fall we’ll head over to the high school to take some of our own back-to-school pictures.
